BaliDiary8. It’s been already two weeks since we stayed on the Gili islands. Meanwhile we travelled to the South of Lombok and came back to Bali where we spent three days in Ubud. Today we are travelling towards north.
I highly recommend to visit the Gili islands which are located in the north-west of Lombok. The sea around the islands is perfect for snorkeling. Gili Trawangan is the party islands among all three, while Gili Meno is the most quiet and Gili Air has the most beautiful beaches. We made up our minds for the last one and planned to spend four nights. On booking.com we found a lovely homestay called Ice Guest House – clean, safe and about a five minutes walk from the harbor. In the end, we decided to stay two more nights longer.

The island was perfect to relax – no traffic, chaos like on Bali. The locals were really welcoming and always good-mooded. I loved the island’s vacation vibe. For around 50,000 IDR you can rent a bike and discover the island or you simply walk on foot like we did. Some of the locals use electric motorbikes and many ride horses. Even thought the horses are nicely decorated some of them look really slim and exhausted. No wonder if their owner chase them over the island during the hot times. Some of them are used for agriculture but most for bringing tourists to their hotels. Poor horses! On the other hand, they’d probably not get enough to eat if nobody would rent them. Both are not the best conditions.

It gets super hot during the day and I recommend to get up between 7 and 8 am to get the best sun. There are not a lot of shadow places on the island, but you can have a juice or something to eat in one of the warungs and enjoy your time there. But make sure to come early as most of the good places are gone around lunch time.

The white sand beaches are indeed beautiful but most parts of the once beautiful coral riff are death and most of it is swept onto the islands which makes strolling on the beaches not so enjoyable. For snorkeling it is great and my boyfriend saw two huge turtels – I wasn’t that lucky. You can rent fins and masks for 40,000 IDR, ca. 2,6€, per day. On the other hand, for swimming it is not so perfect. There are a lot of stones and you need to go really far until the water reaches your chest. Sometimes the currents are strong as well.
Like in all Southern-east Asia the sun sets really early around 6:30pm. It is best to see the sunset in the northern part of the island where we saw some really beautiful ones. On our last days we woke up really early to see the sunrise which is lovely as well. I loved that time when the island was quiet and the sun was not so strong for a stroll on the beach.

All in all, it was a marvelous time and my food recommendations are already up here.

More of Bali is coming up!
