Vietnam Roundtrip Part 6
Back in Hanoi & the nightlife at Bia Hoi Street

Chào bạn! And back to Hanoi where I landed 14 days before. I was excited to spend one last day in the capital of Vietnam. Being a vivid and vibrant city Hanoi faced a long history of occupation. The city was being held up for nearly a century. In fact, in 1954 they finally gained independence. The French influence is still visible nowadays. Especially in the Old Quarter of Hanoi you’ll find many French architecture style buildings. The metropole is therefor also called ‘Paris of the East’. The good thing about it is, that you’ll also find delicious baguette. The Vietnamese converted the classic French ‘sandwich’ (insert French accent ‘sahn-weech’) into their delicious Banh Mi! To conclude my Vietnam entries here are a couple of impressions and tips for Hanoi!

Hanoi TRAIN TRACKS

In the middle of the Old Quarter of Hanoi you’ll find the famous Hanoi train tracks, which lead through narrow streets. Originally, I thought that the train tracks aren’t active anymore. But they are as I’ve just discovered. In fact, there’s a high speed train rushing through daily at 3:30pm and 5:00pm. Crazy! I walked along a part where there was laundry hanging outside, cooking utilities placed near the tracks. Inhabitants need to be aware that they don’t place their bicycle outside at the wrong time. I also spotted a woman drying her ginger on the tracks.

…and one last TEXTILE MARKET!

On my last day I couldn’t resist to rummage on a market and look for more beautiful textiles. Hanoi also offers great markets and I went to the Chợ Hôm – Đức Viên Market (took an uber bike for the longer ride). The market is definitely worth a visit. Especially the linen price was great. Moreover, the food part on the lower floor looked great. I bought a couple of mangos for back in Europe here.

FOOD in Hanoi

Well, I miss the delicious Vietnamese food! And no there is not only Banh Mì or Pho. I’ve discovered so many delicious specialities. Of course, the capital has a lot to offer food wise. Unfortunately, I stayed only for a day. Here are a couple of recommendations from my blogger colleagues:

And one last Tiger beer at the BIA HOI STREET

You have to experience the nightlife in the lively Bia Hoi Street. Together with my blogger colleagues we went there for a last night cap. We quickly found a bar and took a seat on the small plastic stools. Street vendors were coming by. There were a lot of people on the streets. Suddenly the waitress came to us and shooed us away from our table. She and and her bar neighbors started to quickly staple the plastic stools and tables. Then it made all sense – the police was passing by. In fact, they drive regularly through the street in the evening. To check if the bars don’t exceed the allowed terraces in front of their bars.

More nightlife recommendations:
  • Water Puppet Theatre: the theatre is a must when visiting Hanoi. The most famous for it is the Thang Long Puppet Theatre!
  • Binh Minh’s Jazz Club: Minh is one of the most famous jazz musicians. The bar is woozy and he enchants with good music
  • The Bank Hanoi: the biggest nightclub of Hanoi has three different floors. Moreover, you’ll have a great view onto the  Hoan Kiem Lake and Downtown Hanoi
  • Hanoi Opera House: is one of the most famous colonial buildings of Vietnam. If you’re considering to watch an opera make sure to book that in advance!
  • … and more bars: Legend Beer, Dragon Fly Lounge, Sunset Bar at InterContinental Hotel, PressClub Hanoi

Vietnam Roundtrip Part 5
Hoi An: the mecca for tailoring & the best Banh Mi Phuong

„You definitely have to visit Hoi An! And you should absolutely order something tailor-made!”

So said a friend of mine. Because of her enthusiasm, I planned to spend 3 whole days in Hoi An and therefore one day less in Ho Chi Minh. Personally, I didn’t like the city that much. Maybe because of the Vietnamese public holiday and the crowded city. Maybe I just needed some calm days. Maybe I suddenly felt lonely…

Yes, Hoi An is very cute and not for nothing classified as UNESCO World Heritage. The small colorful houses, the cute boats along the river and a great food hall give the city its special charm. I enjoyed the days unhurried, went to the beach once, but didn’t do a lot otherwise. Nevertheless, I didn’t really connect with Hoi An.

If you’re thinking about traveling to Hue: A friend of mine was recently there. The former emperor city is not really worth seeing. In my opinion, it makes more sense to spend more time in Phong Nha Ke-Bag or in the north of Vietnam, Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh.

Getting to HOI AN!

The cute fisher’s village lies in central Vietnam. I flew from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang. Take a taxi at the airport (70k VND – app. 2,5€). Take bus line no. 1 from the Da Nang Bus Station or from any stop (30k VND – ca. 1,1€). I got on here.

  • Getting on the bus was an adveture per se. The bus drove very fast and an employee got out. He took my luggage and “helped” me onto the bus. I was kindly offered a seat. The bus ride took app. 40 minutes and was a little adventure. But, it hasn’t always to be the comfortable shuttle. I took the bus for the return too.
  • The transfer from Da Nang Airport to Hoi An costs app. 18 USD.

What to do in HOI AN?

Honestly, I used the time in Hoi An to relax and unwind. The last ten days have been very intense. You need a few calm days in between when traveling alone. For me it was time to sit into a cafè and work on my emails, write some blog posts and so on and so on… All the better, when you can have a fresh, cool coconut or a tasty smoothi. I preferred going to the CocoBox.

More sightseeing in HOI AN!

  • Take the bike to explore Hoi An! Why walk, when you can ride a bike?
  • Go to the beach: An Bang Beach or Cua Dai Beach. I  went to the beach on the Vietnamese public holiday. Not the very best idea in hindsight. It was soo crowded.
  • Visit a Pagode or a temple: for instance, Van Duc Pagode, Chuch Thanh Pagode or the Phuoc Lam Pagode
  • Make a food tour or take a cooking class!

Buy something TAILOR-MADE!

Since I’d been to Hoi An only for 3 days, I directly went to YALY on my first day (the tailor shop was recommended to me in advance). I wanted to buy some toe sandals and immediately found something suitable. You better have a clear idea of what you want. Even the impossible seems possible. They can make anything.

I was shortly thinking about getting some bright suede boots in the style of Stuart Weitzmann (the original model is too high at the thigh for me). I think, I will regret that I didn’t this fall/winter. They would’ve cost 150USD. In the end, I decided to get golden toe sandals. Yaly was a bit more expensive than other suppliers. But the quality is good! I bought a second pair of sandals at a less expensive supplier, but compared to the Yaly-sandals, the quality is poorer. I spent app. 40€ for my sandals at Yaly.

Try typical dishes, CA LAO – MI QUANG – etc!

It’s strange to be sitting alone in a restaurant when traveling on your own. I enjoyed the streetfood market of Hoi An a lot more. Not only is the market cheap but the food stalls offer super tasty dishes. Hoi An was an important trading point of China and Vietnam. You still see these influences in the kitchen.

You absolutely have to try these specialities:

  • Banh Mi Phuong: while you can find Banh Mi everywhere in Vietnam, Banh Mi Phuong is only offered in Hoi An. Most known is the one of Madame Phuong, which is a mix of different pork meat with vegetables and a lot more. So amazing! I even ordered a second one.
  • Ca Lao: thick, greasy noodles with pork and fresh sprouts – very tasty! For example at Morning Glory or in the Central Food Hall
  • Mi Quang: typical Hoi An dish with noodles, peanuts and fresh herbs
  • White Rose Dumplings (Banh Vac): Dim Sum with a meat and crab filling, inspired by the Chinese. Locations are Miss Ly Cafe 22 or Hoi An dumplings
  • Com Ga: similar to the Hainan Chicken Rice from Singapure, this dish became very popular in Hoi An. I tried it one evening and really liked it. You can have it for instance at An Hien Com Ga or at Dung Com Ga

In my opinion, 2-3 days are absolutely enough for Hoi An. For me, it just got too touristy, idyllic and perfect after some time. I was really looking forward to my last stop in the chaotic and loud, authentic Hanoi!

Vietnam Roundtrip Part 4
Ho Chi Minh City: The pink church & how much fabric fits in a trolley?

After two days in Ho Chi Minh City, I could definitely imagine to live there for a little bit. The city has a lot to offer. On the other hand, it’s not for everyone and I’ve heard that many people didn’t like it.

On one hand, two days were definitely to short to explore all of it. On the other hand, I’ve seen a lot for that short time. I continued my travels on my own in Ho Chi Minh City. Ok, I wasn’t all by myself. One of my closest friend’s uncle has been living in HCM for many years now and took care of me. I was picked up for breakfast and we had dinner together. Moreover, he showed me around the city with his motorcycle. Exploring a city by bike is much more fun. Luckily, there was uber bike, which I’ve used quite excessively during my stay. No wonder, because Saigon is the biggest city of Vietnam! I accidentally caught a public holiday which I celebrated together with my friend’s uncle’s friends. I can tell, it didn’t get boring in Saigon (from now on I will use Ho Chi Minh City, which I prefer)

Noodle soup for BREAKFAST

I love Asian breakfasts. By now, you should know that I prefer salty dishes. As soon as I step onto Asian ground, I crave one of the delicious noodle soups for breakfast. And for that Vietnam is a dream – everyday a delicious Phở-soup! But Vietnamese not only eat Phở for breakfast, but also other dishes like Bánh cuốn – a kind of a wrap of rice with grounded pork and mushroom filling. Due to French influence, you’ll also find a lot of European breakfast choices.

Are 50 METER of FABRICS enough?

Personally, I could’ve bought lots of fabrics. Unfortunately, I was a little bit limited since I was traveling with hand luggage only. But I still had a little bit of space for some meters of fabrics. I bought some beautiful fabrics on the market in HCM – silk, satin and linen (they’re still waiting for getting fabricated by myself). Vietnam is one of the biggest textile producers, silk in specific. Moreover, I bought locally. It couldn’t get better.

  • Silk costs around 7€/meter. Satin is less expensive which you’ll get for 4€/meter. Special textiles, with embroideries for example, were a bit more expensive, 20€/meter. That’s not a lot though.

You can buy fabrics on the famous Ben Thanh Market. Best is, to compare different prices and qualities. I’ve come across Chợ Tân Định Markt, which I highly recommend. I don’t know how many kilometers of textiles you’ll find there. The market lies a bit outside the main centre but it’s definitely worth a visit. The prices are great!

How to get around in HCM: CALL A BIKE!

My days in HCM were definitely too short. The city is huge, which is why I decided to take a uber bike (no advertisement!) once in a while (ok all the time). All you need to order one is data on your phone. I spent approximately 1,20€ / ride.

Eating in HCM

After a good breakfast, I only got a little snack for lunch (i.e. steamed dumplings – yummy!). We went our for dinner in the evening. Luckily, my friend’s uncle knows a couple of good places. When living in HCM, you specifically look for hygienic restaurants.

On our first evening, we ate at Tan Hai Van Restaurant, which I highly recommend. The prices are good and you’ll sit in a typcal Vietnamese restaurant. On my second evening, he brought me to a more fancy restaurant, the Món Ngon Việt Nam, lead by a famous TV cook from Vietnam. The restaurant serves old traditional specialities from whole Vietnam.

Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng

Chào bạn! A 12-hour train ride is something you should do just once in your life. I did one in China and it’s no fun. For time management reasons, I prefer to fly within a country, unless the train system is well developed and fast. From Hanoi, in the North of Vietnam, it is a bit over 500km to get to Central Vietnam. Of course, you can still take the train or the sleeping bus. It’s cheaper but also takes 10 hours. We flew with Vietnam Airlines approximately an hour from Hanoi to Dong Hoi. From there, we went straight into the Nationalpark Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng – beautiful landscape, simple villages and a looot of caves (we visited two of them!). Luckily we also had some free time. The region is perfect to relax. I took my favorite photographs there! I wish we had more time in Phong Nha-Ke Bang.

The early bird GETS THE WORM!
Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng

One thing was immediately apparent: I had to bite into the bullet one morning and get up very early. My alarm rang around 5:30 and I strolled through the sleepy Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng. Sleepy? Not at all. The street was already filled with people. In the early morning, it was a lot hotter and humid than I thought. Flip flops weren’t the best shoes to wear! Hello blisters! After a 20-minute walk I finally reached the bridge, which our tour guide recommended.I reached it right for the sunrise. Behind me, noisy cars and motorcycles were passing, in front of me, there was a beautiful view onto the river and a small fishing boat. The street radio was playing Vietnamese pop music, which I ignored to enjoy the sight. The sun appeared behind the clouds just in the right moment. You’ll see the picture below!

Paradise Cave

After my cave fail at Ha Long Bay, the Paradise cave at Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng, also called Dong Thien Duong cave, was very impressive. Apparently, guides recommend the bigger Phong Nha Cave but a visit of the Paradise Cave is more beautiful. To get to the cave, you need approximately 30 minutes on foot. People were already waiting in front of the cave. It was recommended to become acclimatized before entering the cave. They take special care that not too many people enter the cave. The cave itself is beautifully highlighted with simple lights (not colored ones) and nearly each stop was special. Apparently a British cave explorer found out that it is 31km long. You can explore the first kilometer on a wooden path.

  • You can also book the 7-kilometer tour, which leads through an underwater tunnel and you’ll be having lunch unter a light shaft. However, the tour is a little bit more advanced!

Another highlight were the butterfly swarms. I found them a couple of times sitting in groups. It was such a beautiful moment. I will show you more in my travel video!

Tu Lan Cave

If you are looking for a more adventurous cave visit, I recommend a tour of Tu Lan Cave. You’ll only be equipped with headlights and will be led through the dark cave.

Yen Phu Lake

Last but not least, we visited the last filming spot of the newest King Kong movie – the Yen Phu Lake. The lake is a little bit more difficult to find. Luckily, the GPS of my camera worked perfectly and I’ve marked the position here in my Google Map. By the time we visited, the lake didn’t have so much water. It is located approximately one hour away from Phong Nha Ke Bang. If you’re in the area, you should visit it, but I wouldn’t specifically drive there.

From Dong Hoi, I flew to Saigon, also called Ho Chi Minh City. Due to the public holiday and my super late booking, most of the flights to Da Nang were fully booked. It would have made more sense to fly there first. The flights to Saigon were still payable. Quite expensive for Vietname prices, but ok. But who knows when I’ll be back in Vietnam. #onceinalifetime. Otherwise, I would have flewn to Đà Nẵng first and then down to Hoi An.

Vietnam Roundtrip Part 2
Ninh Bình – the North & Southeast-Asia’s most famous Pagoda

Ninh Binh

Chào bạn! After two rainy days in Ha Long Bay (get to the first part here!), I woke up Southwards of Hanoi in the province of Ninh Binh. We stayed here only for a night, which definitely wasn’t enough to see all. We returned to Hanoi in the early evening. On our day program was a visit of the most famous pagoda of South East Asia (yes, it’s huge!), such as two boat tours – one of them to the filming point of King Kong. Later that afternoon, we also spotted some small versions of King Kong in the trees. So cute!

The most famous and biggest pagoda Southeast Asia’s Bái Đính Pagoda

The pagoda lies on a 539 acre at the foot of the Dinh mountains. The old pagoda lies a little bit hidden on the west side, while the new Bai Dinh Pagoda was constructed prominently on the other side. It was constructed in 2003. We were lucky to be there very early in the morning and went from the upper part down to the entrance. Usually it’s the other way round. Therefore, there weren’t so many people around. The walk through the palace was magical. There are various halls and small temples with huge Buddha statues. I would recommend to visit for about 3-4 hours.

Onto the next filming spot Tràng An Nature Reserve
in Ninh Binh

Given the name ‘scenic landscape complex’, Tràng An was rewarded as UNESCO world heritage. The karst peaks permeated with valleys are indeed beautiful. The region is a popular spot for boat tours but also cave visits (well, there are a lot of them in whole Vietnam). We went on two boat tours that day – the first through the Tràn An Nature Reserve. There you’ll find another filming spot of King Kong. They kept the filming spot and you can visit it now. It’s called ‘Skull Island’.

Finally some sun! Boat tour through the VAN LONG NATURE RESERVE

I was happy like a kid when the sun finally came out. I hadn’t been that lucky with the weather on my last Asia trips. This time the weather god was very kind.

We reached the stunning Van Long Nature Reserve in the early afternoon. I preferred this boat tour much more because it wasn’t overloaded with tourists. It’s located approximately 20km from Tràn An. I highly recommend this tour!

  • Luckily Capucine bought some Asian hats in a tourist shop. The sun was stronger than expected and you see how white I was back then!

My absolute highlight of the day was the visit of the Bai Dinh Pagoda that morning. Each place was magical. In the next post, I’ll bring you further to Central Vietnam, to Quangh Binh to the famous Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park!
