Central Dalmatia. My first time in Croatia! But as it turned out, I wasn’t the only one of our traveling group. The whole country was high on my travel list this year and I couldn’t be more excited about this presstrip. Speaking of Croatia many or you may think of Istria in the north or the city Dubrovnik. More experienced ones have already visited one of Croatia’s beautiful national parks. One of them wasn’t that far away from our destination – the town of Sibenik in Central Dalmatia and its region.

How to get to Sibenik

We flew wih a small propeller airplane from Munich to Split, which is located in Southern Dalmatia. An hour drive awaited us until we’d reach our hotel the D-Resort Šibenik. We passed beautiful turquoise water and the small villages. They were preparing for the upcoming season. We the vineyards of Primošten, which are contender for the UNESCO World Heritage list. Four days were ahead of us to dive into the Croatian culture.

Best time to travel

To travel in the low season has clearly its advantages. It was so nice and quiet that I don’t want to imagine how crowded it is during the high season. Unfortunately, the weather was mixed. One day we were walking in the rain through Sibenik, which luckily was followed by wonderful sunny days. The best time to travel is in late May / early June and again in September.

Oldtown Šibenik

The town of Sibenik is located in central Dalmatia and has about 50,000 residents. A sweet little town with an amazing old town core – winding little streets, where you can get easily los; repeatedly spaces open with beautiful Croatian monuments. The proximity to the water adds a maritime flair. Šibenik lies at the mouth of the river Krka into the Adriatic Sea and provides mixed river and lake water. As a matter of fact, the water quality is great for clam breeding. The Croatian cities are reminiscent of Lake Garda’s little towns. Likewise, people are sitting outside during any kind of weather drinking coffee. The coffee culture is similar to the Italian one here given the fact that an espresso costs around 1€.

Unfortunately the weather has scotched our Sibenik-visit. Therefore, we saw the city just quickly. This is a good reason to come back soon!

My highlights in Šibenik

  • The Katedrala sv. Jakova. Also, St. Jacob Cathedral Šibenik. It is among the most important Renaissance buildings in Dalmatia. There are 71 engraved portraits on its facade, which is quite impressive. Unfortunately, the Cathedral and was renovated during our visit and we couldn’t climb up to the cupola.
  • Lunch at the restaurant Pelegrini. A fabulous gourmet restaurant. A post will follow!
  • Up to the St. Michael Fortress. You’ll have a fantastic view onto the city and the canal. It was renovated some time ago and has a generous Arena, where concerts are held in summer. Admission is here 20-35KN, around 2.6 to 4.6 €.
  • Medieval Mediterranean Garden of St Lawrence Monastery. On the way up to the fort you may stumble over this pretty garden – a small oasis in the city. Admission costs 15KN. Tip: under the garden there is a beautiful Marian grotto!

Nationalpark KRKA

Who would have thought that I can check off a point from my travel bucket list already in the first half of the year. On the second day a visit to the National Park KRKA was on the agenda. Croatians are very smart and have protected most of their nature.

From our hotel, the D-Resort Sibenik, it was a short 20 minute drive. We left around 9:00 am and we could get a glance from the top onto the beautiful sea landscape. My tip here – start much earlier, because the park is a popular destination. In particular, the basin of the waterfall Skradinski buk quickly fills up with American travel troops jumping into the water in every season to take pictures.

Admission to the park costs 30-95 kunas (5-12 €) depending on the season. This includes the park, the ethnographic museum and also a half-hour boat ride from Skradin and Lozovac a rail shuttle service.

The view of the water is really impressive – the wonderful blues and greens. The viewpoint above was my favourite. I can only repead myself how diverse Europe is. I was more impressed by the colors of the water than the famous Skradinski Buk, the largest waterfall. Maybe I’m a little bit spoiled having visited the Iguazu Waterfalls and Jiughzaigu National Park in China.

Dinner at a traditional konoba Kuća dalmatinskog pršuta Roca

As wonderful end to our press trip we had dinner at a typical Konoba, a Croatian tavern. We visited the Kuća Dalmatinskog pršuta Roca in Pirovac, which is a 25 minute drive away from Šibenik. A beautiful traditional hide living from wine and olive growing and selling one of the best ham and various sausages.

Everything is homemade, smoked, boiled and grilled. From the pig to the finished smoked Dalmatian Pršut. The ham and the sausages taste great and delicious potato bread fits only too with it.

The Dalmatian cuisine has a typical dish called Peka, which is prepared in a big aluminum pot. Potatoes, various sorts of meats (usually lamb but you can order other kinds) and onions will be covered with coals and cook for two hours. The result is juicy meat whose sauce was also absorbed by the potatoes and onions. A dream! We ate at a quaint cellar that reminded me even more of our South Tyrolean Törggelen. The chicken was so tasty and a light salad with wild asparagus suited perfectly. I highly recommend a visit to a typical tavern!

These were my tips for the region Šibenik. Of course, the days were way too short to explore more, which is one more reason to come back soon. Next time in summer, though. In order to enjoy all those beautiful beaches, which I’ll show you in the next post!

#lifewelltravelled | the perfect weekender & travel accessories

travel essentials Maxwell Scott Flero S bag

Weekender. How long have I been looking for a nice travel bag? Ever! My boyfriend has seized my trolley and I temporarily switched to his weekender. On shorter travels and weekend trips I don’t need a bigger bag. Thus a large weekender is handy enough and looks stylish too. I’ve been dallying over the pretty Maxwell Scott Bags for a while now! Let’s go the whole hog.

Maxwell Scott Bags FleroS What makes a good travel bag?

Clearly, the quality, the shape and the comfort! My Maxwell Scott Bags Flero S has been travelling a lot with me lately – on a weekend trip to Hamburg, as hand luggage to Croatia and Mallorca. I’m super satisfied with its quality as it is sturdy and keeps the interior intact.

A few facts about the travel bag:

The Maxwell Scott Bags products are manufactured in the heart of Tuscany

Maxwell Scott Bags offers a 25 year warranty on its products

The FleroS consists of full leather (thickest and the uppermost layer of cow skin)

The brand attaches great importance to vegetable tanned leather, which is a complicated method with a 200-year tradition

It holds 17 liters, weighs 2.1 kg, having a practical interior and exterior pocket

costs € 461

Always with me

The bag holds up plenty of space but not too much. That’s good indeed good because I always tend to pack way too much. The frequent packing and unpacking of the last trips was a little training and I improved myself. No matter where or how short I travel, I always carry these things with me:

  • My Macbook (I love to type my texts and work while I’m on the road)
  • My Canon 6d with 1-2 lenses (I’m always angry when I leave the good camera at home)
  • My Olympus Pen E-PL7 (for quick snapshots and Instagram photos)
  • A mobile battery for multiple charges (I no longer leave the house without my charger because my phone discharges way too quickly)
  • Charging cable for Macbook and iPhone
  • toiletry bag and a beauty case in travel format (the bag is always in reach in my bathroom)

My favorite Travel look

I love it cozy when I’m traveling. My mom has always pointed out that we always should wear long pants for any trips. I still follow that advice. Paired with cozy sneakers, like this lace model from Superga and a cozy cardigan. I rarely wear scarves and always need to remind myself of bringing one. The aircon in airplanes is way too strong most of the times.

What do you prefer? A weekender or a trolley?

March recap. Hello new month! Hello better weather than in April, hopefully. I can’t complain too much though, as I didn’t notice the bad weather last month a lot. Why that? I have been travelling a lot in April, but more about that later. Many of you may already have followed on Instagram. For now, I am looking forward to being in Munich more often and to concentrating wholeheartedly on university and work.

Monthly favorites WORKOUT

Finally, I started to go jogging again. I had an appointment at the orthopedist a few weeks ago where he checked my legs. Jogging hadn’t been easy for me anymore because my knee was hurting. But I didn’t want to stop because I love my 30-50 minutes workout in the English Garden. I knew that muscles don’t grow overnight and that I had to take things slowly. I did a lot of Blogilates in the last three months and so I braced myself. I started a few weeks ago to go jogging for 30 minutes almost every day and I try to improve slowly. The main thing is to keep going, because when I’m abroad I never find the time to work out.

Monthly favorites RECIPES

After all my trips I was happy to cook throughout the whole weekend. We rarely eat in restaurants at the moment since I passionately try new recipes. Recently, I got the burger-bible per se as a present, the Burger Unser, and I immediately read the whole book. My burger buns finally turned out right. The recipes are so delicious…

Monthly favorites BOUGHT

It’ always tempting to go shopping on trips. Standing at the airport in Palma de Mallorca and seeing the prices at Mango, I just had to buy something! I bought this pretty overall – hoping for warm summer nights. I’m trying to buy nothing this month but sell some of my things instead.

Monthly favorites SEEN

Finally, I have watched all seasons of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. The show was running in the background almost all day long. Now I really have to find something new. Luckily, Made in Chelsea has started again, but, unfortunately, I have to wait one week until the new episode comes out. I’ll watch the new one tomorrow.

Monthly favorites PLANNED – TRAVEL

This month will be very calm. I’m looking forward to spending more time in Munich if the weather will be better. Only one short trip to South Tyrol at Pentecost is on my agenda.

Let the wedding season begin… ❥ M & J

Wedding season. The season is in full swing! A couple of weeks ago I took pictures of this gorgeous wedding here in Munich. We were so lucky with the weather and it started raining cats and dogs right when I left the festivities. The rest of the day was so beautiful – styling in the morning, civil wedding in Schwabing, spring photo session nearby and liberal wedding ceremony later on.

I wish you two all the best for your future and your little daughter. Thank you for the trust and letting me photograph your big day!

Restaurants in Munich | Vietnamese at Thao

Thao. Testing restaurants in Munich is so fun! Recently, I checked my endless eating list on Yelp and chose a favorite. I arranged to meet Irina at the Vietnamese restaurant Thao near the Prinzregentenplatz at lunch. The lunch menu was very reasonable in terms of price and I was already craving the delicious lemonades that are posted on Instagram.

Vietnamese restaurant THAO

The Vietnamese Thao is a spacious restaurant with approximately 20 tables inside and few outside. We could have taken a seat on the terrace outside with the beautiful weather, but, unfortunately, there were no seats available and it was also nice inside.

thao münnchen vietnamese prinzregentenplatz bogenhausen

Thao THE FOOD

The menu looked great online and I saw that they also have a great lunch menu. Most of the Vietnamese restaurants in Munich have one. We ordered tasty spring rolls, the duck with oyster sauce and the rice noodles bowl with chicken of the lunch menu (9.70€). We also got two delicious lemonades (7.00€). The spring rolls and the drinks were served quickly, but then we had to wait for a long time for the rest. My rice noodles with chicken were delicious. Irina’s chicken was okay, but nothing outstanding. We waited for too long! Nevertheless, I like the restaurant and I would like to try more of the dinner menu. It must be very comfy in the evening.

Thao THE SERVICE

I understand that it’s quite busy at lunch time, but I became a bit nasty after half an hour. Every time the waitress came by, I looked at her hungrily. Unfortunately, all other tables, even the people who arrived after us, were waited before us. Tasty food was served around us again and again, until it was enough for me and I asked for our dishes. But with German it’s a bit difficult here. The waitress just said that we will get our food soon… three times! After three quarters of an hour we finally got our dishes.

I told the waitress about our long waiting time before leaving. I should have said it in Vietnamese, because she didn’t really understand my complaint. Never mind! Next time we will sit outside and maybe get our food quicker.
