The origin of Grey Goose

Vodka isn’t made out of Cognac, is it? Why have you been in Cognac with Grey Goose? Isn’t Vodka usually produced in Russia? I knew that Grey Goose vodka originally comes from France but I didn’t know the connection between Cognac and Vodka. This made me even more curious to travel into the history of the premium vodka Grey Goose and breathe in some French air.

Le Logis GREY GOOSE

The beautiful manor house Le Logis Grey Goose is located half an hour away from the Atlantic coast. The charming little town Cognac is in a half hour distance and you’ll reach Bordeaux after a 1,5 hours’ drive. The manor house dates back to the 16th century and is full of history. The French law protects many of old manor houses, which makes it difficult for renovations. That is why the house had been renovated basing on the historic stile. This is exactly the type of vacation house for a French holiday. The French charm will lead you through the whole villa and is combined with retro glam elements. All in the colors of Grey Goose, of course! The kitchen, where we all met for breakfast, was especially cozy. You’ll feel a lot more at home living like this.

The link between COGNAC UND VODKA

But back to the connection between Cognac and Vodka! As the name implies, the region of Cognac is the only one where you’re allowed to produce Cognac. The type of grape Uni Blanc is only produced for Cognac. Soil and microclimate are the most important factors for wine making. In fact, the soil consists out of two layers. Limestone is the lower part, from which the grape gets its proteins.

The most important person in the production of Cognac is the “Maître de Chai” (engl. Cellarer). Here comes François Thibault into play. The maître de chai was raised in the region of Cognac and so to speak has spirituous liquor in his blood. He loves experimenting with incredible spirits, which involved him with the American entrepreneur Sidney Frank.

„There is no vodka in France“ „I know but the Vodka you’re gonna make doesn’t exist“

wwww.thegoldenbun.com | le logis grey goose vodka cognac francois thibault

„Cognac taught me that you shouldn’t make any compromises between quality and taste!”

wwww.thegoldenbun.com | le logis grey goose vodka cognac francois thibault

Grey Goose’s HISTORY in a nutshell

The history of vodka dates back to many centuries. Usually one connects vodka with Russia. The problem is that most vodkas are produced industrially and of bad quality. No premium vodkas! Sidney Frank believed in the talent of François Thibault and was sure that his knowledge would create the „World’s Best Tasting Vodka“. When Monsieur Thibault agreed, he only needed to find a way to produce it. Classic vodka is usually produced out of potatoes. “Many Russians make homemade vodka with the potatoes from their garden. But my garden was way too small”, laughed François.

wwww.thegoldenbun.com | le logis grey goose vodka cognac francois thibault wwww.thegoldenbun.com | le logis grey goose vodka cognac francois thibault

„Pour une cuisine de qualité, il faut utiliser les meilleurs ingrédients“ Just like the French chef de cuisine also Maître de Chai François Thibault is persuaded that you need the best ingredients for the best quality. This is why he chose only the finest French ingredients for his vodka recipe – winter wheat from the Picardie region and pure spring water from the Gensac-La-Pallue in the region of Cognac. The production of the „World’s Best Tasting Vodka“ also needs very strict quality checks. In fact, there are 500 checks of quality daily!

1 Why Picardie? 7% of the worldwide production of wheat is in the region. The wheat grows naturally and therefore is of best quality and quantity. As a matter of fact, the flour is the best of France. I’m sure you all know the delicious smell of a fresh baguette?

Grey Goose THE TASTING

After our morning tasting of Cognac, we could finally try the various sorts of Vodka. I wasn’t familiar with flavored vodkas, which are definitely great for us women. Unfortunately, they aren’t sold in Germany but all over the USA. Here are different kinds:

GREY GOOSE La Poire
GREY GOOSE L’Orange
GREY GOOSE Le Citron
GREY GOOSE Cherry Noir
GREY GOOSE Le Melon

My absolute favorite was the GREY GOOSE Le Melon, which tastes of summer. It is also the first time that melon was added to alcohol. Another fact, which I didn’t know, is that the melons of Cavaillon are so famous. I love that France is culinary so diverse!

Men love the GREY GOOSE VX and the GREY GOOSE Ducasse a lot. The Ducasse is made out of toasted wheat and has this great roast aroma.

Grey Goose FOODPAIRING

We ended the afternoon with a foodpairing, which was very interesting. This approves that alcohol and food harmonize perfectly. My favorite pairing was the GREY GOOSE Le Citron and a trout tartar from Gensac La Pallue on a Lemon Double cream with lime and dill.

French morning in Cognac

Bonjour! I’m currently working on my article of my great experience with Grey Goose in Cognac. Before that I quickly wanted to share these beautiful impressions with you. Since I arrived super late in the night I didn’t get a chance to see the beautiful Le Logis manor house and surroundings by daylight. Still jetlagged I’ve woken up quite early in the morning. The sun was about to rise behind the hills and the sun flares were just perfect. My photographer heart wishes for sunrises like these every day! Well, France is just too beautiful and will always have a special place in my heart!

Enjoy the pictures!

#ExpeditionOutdoorLife | Backpacking in Thailand

It’s not my first time that I backpacked while travelling. Bali two years ago was my first time and since then a couple of more travels followed. I find some countries much more relaxed to visit with a large backpack. Before my departure Tatonka sent me one of their Yukon 60+10 Women trekking backpacks to test. Here are a couple of reasons why I love backpacks in general.

www.thegoldenbun.com | backpacking in thailand, tatonka yukon backpack travel      www.thegoldenbun.com | backpacking in thailand, tatonka yukon backpack travel

Backpacking in Thailand

  1. You don’t over pack! I always packed way too much useless stuff. For my Thailand trip I packed around 15 kg and due all the fruit I bought I came home with 20 kg. 15 kg is the maximum weight I can carry and 20 kg was already way too heavy.
  2. However, a good backpack has comfortable waist straps which shift the weight
  3. I’m better organized in my backpack. My Yukon 60+10 is divided into three parts. The lower bag is perfect for shoes and anything heavy. You can open the middle part like a normal gym bag and there’s a third part on top, where you can put lighter stuff.
  4. Roads may be bumpy and you don’t want to pull your luggage through mud etc. I did that a couple of times and it wasn’t fun.
  5. If you want to get to farther destinations by motorbike you can simply lift it on your shoulder and off you go.

Keep in mind that some airlines have restrictions and you may put your backpack in a cover, which I had to. All in all, I’m super happy with my choice. Isn’t the colour of my backpack great? At least I find it immediately at the airport.

Have you already backpacked? Let me know your experience!

I wish you a great start into the week!

Authentic Thailand | Talae Nok – living with locals

[Advertisement*] upon invitation of Green Pearls & TAT Frankfurt

www.thegoldenbun.com | andaman discoveries, authentic thailand, ban thalae nok village
Green palms, tropical weather, lonely beaches, a small fishing village, incredibly welcoming people. I could add more features here. Our stay at the Talae Nok Village was one of the most beautiful experiences in Phang Nga. One of my best travel experiences.

www.thegoldenbun.com | andaman discoveries, authentic thailand, ban thalae nok village

Living with locals Talae Nok Community

Talae Nok is a small Muslim community, whose village was also hit by the Tsunami in 2004. The remote beach and the retreat to the inland are all consequences by the natural disaster. Even though many of the 170 inhabitants are still fishing people many amongst them are scared of the beach. 22 houses were rebuilt in a short time with the help of the government. Moreover, they have many programs to give them work. For example batik dying, soap making and more.

Since it is a Muslim community you should follow a couple of rules:

  • dress appropriately covering your shoulders and clothing until knee length
  • no alcohol allowed

One evening they also dressed us up in their traditional headscarf. You should have seen the women’s faces. They were so happy and appreciated this gesture so much!

www.thegoldenbun.com | andaman discoveries, authentic thailand, ban thalae nok village

We were warmly welcomed in the village by our host families. The women prepared a delicious lunch for us – probably the best meal I’ve had in Thailand. Fresh crabs, swordfish filet, beans with chilli and garlic, pineapple curry and much more. The food was also so delicious the following days. Not only could we look over their shoulder we also set our hands to help them.

If you’re thinking this village will be all calm and relaxing you’re absolutely wrong. The cocks started crowing already at 2 am, which is quite unusual. Chicken were running on the streets with their little ones and also the cows from the surrounding fields came to visit us.

Day tour to the surrounding Cham islands

We were quite lucky with the weather when we were off to discover the surrounding Cham Islands by boat. Even though we were far away from the village it wasn’t respectful to wear a bikini on the island. However, a couple of hours in the sun felt so good. Also there – hardly any tourist far and wide. Once in a while some Asian tourists came on the island, sprang in the water with their swim vests and hopped onto the boat again for the next island. Our host families prepared a delicious lunch for us which we’ve enjoyed on the island. The Thai food is also delicious when eaten cold. The cold food doesn’t appear so spicy.

I have to admit that I felt the most relaxed in the local community – no internet connection, no obligations. I could have definitely gotten used to this state. Unfortunately, we drove back to Khao Lak after three days in the village. I could have stayed much longer.

A huge thank you to Andaman Discoveries for this amazing opportunity and of course, to our host families.

I wish you a wonderful day!
