Let’s talk shoes.

Four days in Barcelona – 7 non & touristy places we’ve seen

parc del laberint d'horta non touristic things to do in Barcelona, Barcelona sightseeing, Barcelona, citytour Barcelona
EN
Barcelona. This was my first trip to Barcelona and it was just great! For ages I wanted to go there, but had never made it. This time I told myself it’s now or never and just planned the trip. Lo and behold – two of my best girlfriends spontaneously joined me and in such good company it became a perfect trip.

These last months I visited many cities, where I had been before, thus I had a rough idea of what to see. As to Barcelona I had no idea where to go and what to see. Hence it took me weeks to read up on the best places of interest (especially on restaurants and bars about which a separate report will follow). Above all I always try to eliminate the too touristy places and was happy, when a local confirmed that I had found excellent places outside the mainstream.

These are the places we saw in Barcelona – insider tips and typical sights.

Things to do in Barcelona parc del laberint d’horta

Thanks to Laura Lee of thetravelette.com I found some . Indeed, the Parc de Labyrinth D’Horta is not yet well known: only local children scrimmaged around us having fun in the maze. Unfortunately we had not enough time for the rest of the Park, but it was nevertheless worth our visit. This Park is located in the north of the town and it took us a good half hour by tube from Catalunya.

Things to do in Barcelona Parc Güell

How could we have skipped Parc Güell? We arrived at noon and had no idea that we had to pay gate money for its lower part. My girlfriend was there three years ago, when entrance was still free also for the lower part of the park. And we were there shortly before Easter, when tourists already began to crowd the town. That day entrance was unfortunately already closed, so that we could admire this attraction only from the outside. Hence, should you wish to view Gaudì’s architecture also from the inside, you better reserve a ticket online. Fast lane is also possible and costs a bit more, but anyhow it would not have helped us to get in earlier.

Things to do in Barcelona take long walks

I prefer exploring towns by foot. Thus you get more intensive experiences. Above all you discover places, which are not listed in any travel guide – small lanes or a much hidden tapas restaurant or other wonderful spots, as in our case by chance a street housing different outlets, amongst which a Mango outlet.

Things to do in Barcelona Jardins de Rubió i Lluch

The Jardins de Rubió i Lluch is also part of the „Spots found by chance” category. On our last day we strolled leisurely through Barcelona and found some beautiful places. This garden emanates Catalan feeling – the orange trees bore marvelous fruits and were simply gorgeous spreading the purest spring atmosphere.

Things to do in Barcelona Barcelona Beach

A town having access to water is always super, be it the sea or the creek called Eisbach here in Munich. In any case it increases the quality of life. I had read in many travel guides that Barcelona Beach is not particularly worth seeing. Nevertheless many improvements were made during these last years, the entire beach has been cleaned for the public, several outdoor sports areas have been set up as well as a beautiful promenade. It was already nice and warm in March and in the summer the beach must be really beautiful. The eastern part was a bit quieter. But in the summer the whole beach is probably overcrowded I would imagine.

Things to do in Barcelona Bunker Turó de la Rovira

The Bunker Turó de la Rovira is no longer an insider tip (amongst youngsters). A friend of my girlfriend lives in Barcelona and took us a bit around, and of course also to this bunker, which is a must. He was very surprised that I had already spotted that place during my online research. It can be easily reached by bus, from where it is within walking distance. From the top you have a breathtaking view over the town. Luckily A. gave us a short briefing, which provided us a good overview of the various locations. Being an architect he knows his way around. Unfortunately we did not manage to visit some of the more modern buildings. The bunker was definitely one of my highlights of this town.

Things to do in Barcelona Casa Batlló

You cannot do without some Gaudi architecture in Barcelona. But we ended up in seeing his buildings only from the outside. Having been for the first time in Barcelona I just wanted to get a rough overview of the town. Next time I will visit these buildings thoroughly.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this posts. There are so many things to be seen there that it certainly was not my last trip to Barcelona! Moreover, a couple of hotel recommendations and a huge food diary will be online this within this week!

#thegoldenbunontour | Grand Pigalle Hotel – where to stay in Paris

where to stay in Paris – Grand Pigalle Hotel , hotels in Paris, hotel in Paris, hotel Montmartre
EN
Grand Pigalle Hotel. As I said I had the opportunity to try a couple of hotels in Paris. However, not all of my stays were as pleasant as I’d expected. My boyfriend and I usually sleep in other neighborhoods in Paris. Therefore, staying in Pigalle/Montmartre should be something different. Perfect also to explore Montmartre more.

The Grand Pigalle Hotel is located, like the name anticipates, not even a five minutes’ walk to the metro station Pigalle. When entering, there is a stylish and cozy bar/restaurant. The hotel breakfast is also served there. From 11 am on it will open for the public too. In fact, it’s super popular for brunches. I would have loved taking some pictures of the breakfast for you but we arrived only five minutes to 11am. Usually it’s no problem to stay a quarter of an hour longer but apparently all tables were already booked for the Sunday brunch. Hungrily, we had so find something else in Montmartre as the bar wasn’t willing to serve us a quick breakfast.

Grand Pigalle Hotel Our Room

In total the Grand Pigalle has 37 rooms. Our room was nice and had a big cozy bed. The pillows! I’ve never seen so comfortable pillows in a hotel. We had a cute balcony with a great view onto Sacrè-Coeur and to the city centre. However, the room was quite tiny and there was only little space for my suitcase.

Unfortunately, there was a lot of noise at night and in the morning within the hotel and outside. Apparently there was a marathon passing by the hotel and people were shouting encouragement to the runners in the street.

Grand Pigalle Hotel the neigborhood

To be honest, Montmartre is not one of my favorite neighborhoods but still there are a couple of places I love. What I recommend:

  • while the front part of Montmartre may be super touristy, take a stroll on the backside. This is also where all those cool super steep stairs are located.
  • behind Sacré-Coeur there is a lovely garden
  • Café Marlette is a super cute spot for a Sunday brunch
  • one of my favorite (but always super busy on weekends) restaurants is Marcel. We always went there around 10-11 o’clock and left our names in case a table wasn’t free. Took a stroll through Montmartre and came back as soon as a place was ready.
  • there is the cute square St. Georges, where I’ve passed a lot of times.

what I didn’t like

I’d seen the Grand Pigalle Hotel on a lot of other blogs and I loved the interior. However, my blogger colleagues’ stays had seemed to be great – ours wasn’t. Unfortunately, we didn’t have any luck. Apart from our super loud night, the missed breakfast, also the elevator was not working and we had to carry ourselves our luggage all the way down from the 5th floor.

#theSecretofShoes.

Ingolstadt Village The Secret of Shoes

A little Paris Diary

weekend in paris1
EN
Paris diary. Paris Paris! I was really excited for Paris since our last time dates already back to August. I arrived around noon on Friday and had some free time the whole afternoon. When I got there the weather was perfect and I wished for good weather for the weekend. Unfortunately, Paris turned into its usual grayness and it was super cold.

Paris and I are not in a good place right now. During the last three years I spent more time in Paris than back home in South Tyrol. Don’t get me wrong – being in Paris is always great but right now I feel that I’ve seen most of it and get a little bit bored of the city. Moreover, I’m never driving there for shopping. For the restaurants I definitely would. I think we both need some time apart now and I need to discover new places. Nonetheless, I’ve discovered a couple of new places this time…

Burger at Le Burger Fermier

I love Expat Edna’s ‚The best things I ate in…‘ – Paris for example Posts. Through her I found Le Burger Fermier at Le Marché des Enfants Rouges. Whenever I’m in Paris I need to eat one of those delicious burger. Therefore, I head there and grabed a hamburger with cheddar cheese and bacon plus fries. There is a fix price of 10€ for a burger and you can choose the type of cheese and top it with bacon for example. The burger was okay but definitely not the best in Paris. I found it a little bit dry and I’d wished for other sauces. Maybe I need to try another kind of cheese next time.

Lunch at Brasserie Lipp

After my burger I met up with Amandine in Saint-Germain-des-Près. We always meet by coincidence in Paris (I think we saw us more times in Paris than in Germany). Of course, not having seen us in a long time we had a lot to catch up. We drank and ate at Café Lipp which is also a classic in Paris opposite Café de Flore (quite expensive, though!). After my burger a hot chocolate was enough for me, which was very good. Amandine got a big plate of choucroute garnie.

Brunch at Breakfast in America 3

On Sunday morning we’ve missed breakfast at our hotel and strolled down to the second arrondissement from Pigalle. Paris is great for brunchs on a Sunday and we chose Breakfast in America. The prices sounded reasonable with a brunch for 14€. All in all, it was okay but nothing extraordinary. Well, foodwise Paris wasn’t so kind to me this time.

Les passages

In Paris there are so many lovely passages and galeries. You’ll probably know the most famous one – Galerie Vivienne. When we took a stroll down from Montmartre we saw one Galerie and walked through it. Right after there came two more and they were just so beautiful. Apparently, there is a street where there is one galerie after the other (maybe it was this one). Moreover, people live in the upper floors and you’ll notice entrances once in a while.

Stroll through Saint-Germain-des-Prés

On Sunday afternoon my boyfriend has already gone back to Munich and I had some free-time. I took a long walk to Saint-Germain-des-Près. Even though I lived there for four months in the beginning of my exchange year I discovered a lot more new places. I can only repeat myself – in Paris you’ll never get bored!
