Phang Nga – discover Thailand without tourists

Thailand is incredibly diverse – Bangkok culturally and culinarily exciting, the high North a famous hiking paradise and the relaxing places in the South of Thailand. All this makes it to one of the most famous travel destinations for German tourists. But the country has one big problem – mass tourism. It destroys beautiful islands, coral reefs, are suffering from extinction, local people torture elephants only with the aim that tourists can ride on them – awful.

But it was time for me to finally discard this stereotype and to look for real travel moments! For example do you remember my ? These are exactly the impressions I’m looking for when traveling. The trip to the region Phang Nga was exactly what I sought – Thailand without tourists. Moreover the trip was focused on sustainability. Sustainable traveling in Thailand? Oh yes, it’s possible. Let me tell you how.

To be honest, there is so much to tell. Where should I begin?

Thailand without tourists Khao Lak, Phang Nga

Together with four dear blogger colleagues I flew from Munich via Bangkok in the South to Phuket. From there our driver took us to the 1,5 hours away Khao Lak in Phang Nga. The next days we were about to experience the real Thailand – Thailand without tourists. We were invited from the for the first nights – a wonderful beach resort. Coconut first – a refreshing drink was much needed after the long flight. The coconut water tastes deliciously at the resort. The evening ended with a nice welcoming dinner.

Useful Travel information

Flights – cheap low cost flights attract a lot of tourists. For example, Thai Airways flies directly to Bangkok from Munich. Frankfurt has even a direct connection to Phuket. Flights cost between 400 – 600€.

Climate – Thailand’s main season is from November until February. We got there at the beginning of April, which is right in the monsoon season. Usually it only rains for about an hour during the day. The past years have been incredibly dry. It was very unusual that it rained from noon until the evening every single day during our stay. But we weren’t put off by this.

Thailand without tourists Eco Khaolak Adventures

Compared to its neighbour regions Phang Nga is still untouched: a rolling landscape with jungle covered woods, long remote beaches, a couple of national parks with caves and waterfalls. You won’t experience much tourism here. We were accompanied by Eco Khaolak Adventures for two days. The company is specialized in authentic and sustainable day tours. Through them we discovered the region of Khao Lak quite well. The beautiful thing of their trips is that they always showed us something special: a small pharmacy, the local market or a visit to a small tailor shop. There wasn’t one tourist in sight!

Baan Sam Chong Nua Village

One of my favourites was the visit of the local community of Baan Sam Chong Nua Village. A small Muslim fishing village – colourful, authentic, at some corners quite run down, quiet. The local people introduced us into the technique of batik. Moreover, they have a huge rubber tree plantation. They showed us how they collect the rubber, which is mostly done early in the morning. Especially in summer it gets extremely hot in the region.

Little recommendation: the famous James Bond bay is one hour away by boat from the village. They have got three clean home stays, whereof one lies directly at the sea. I highly recommend a stay.

Over a decade ago the Tsunami Trauma

I didn’t think of what an awful catastrophe happened in 2004 in Thailand: the Tsunami wave destroyed a massive part of Thailand, Burma but also Sri Lanka. The region of Phang Nga was affected the most. In Europe they may have already forgot about the natural catastrophe. However, local people still suffer from it. Before it happened people weren’t well informed about possible natural disasters in their country. As a matter of fact, many people ran to the beach to admire the water withdrawing. Nowadays every little child is educated about it and knows how everyone should react. Moreover, there are placed many sensors in the sea and there are many escape points in the surrounding villages. > after a Tsunami warning you’ve got 30 minutes to remove yourself. You should be 40 kilometres away from the coast line and 50 metres above sea level.

Unbelievable that still many inhabitants suffer a trauma. Even ten years later they can hardly cope with the happenings.

Saori for Tsunami

We were confronted for the first time with this topic in our Hotel. The whole Khao Lak Laguna Resort was completely destroyed by the wave and rebuilt in 2008. The region has many foundations to support the local people. E.g. the Khao Lak Laguna Resort supports the Mayagotami Fondation – Saori for Tsunami Thailand, which is a small manufacture for women who’ve lost their husbands and other family members in the wave. ‘Saori’ means freedom. The sewing and weaving is a kind of meditation to help them to cope with their tsunami. Moreover, they can earn some money. I’ll come back to this topic in my next article!

Cashew in Thailand?

Originally, this nut isn’t from Asia but was imported from South America. Thailand had a huge tin mining business, which left vast stark parts. Cashew nuts grow really quickly, which is why they planted them there. On our way we accidentally passed by a small cashew nut manufacture. The cashew nuts are dried outside, roasted in the oven and finally opened by hand. The women, who work there earn 30 baht per kilo (80 cent). Antonia bought a small bag of cashew there for 260 baht (6,80€) – you can calculate the manufacture’s profit now.

The “Sleeping Village” Takua Pa

After lunch we were picked up by a typical traditional taxi and drove to Takua Pa. The 1500 inhabitant city is also called Sleeping Village because only elderly people live there. There is no university and joung people tend to move to Khao Lak. It was indeed very quiet. With very quiet I mean absolutely dead. Close to the city you’ll find two beautiful temples – a Buddhist and a Chinese temple. Unfortunately it started to rain early in the afternoon. We stopped off at a small café to enjoy a tasty Cha Yen.

The two days with Eco Khaolak Adventure rushed by like nothing. A beautiful experience of Thailand without tourists, which I highly recommend. The staff was super friendly and helpful. Having a translator made the communication with local people even easier.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this litte exkursion to Thailand! The second part will be online within this week! I wish you a wonderful day!

I’m back from Vietnam and I’ve just finished editing all the beautiful pictures. I’ve got so many great impressions for you. But first – the Thailand posts are still in the line. Therefore, I’ll leave you with a quick outfit post from Vietnam today. Luckily, my Oasis order arrived just in time before I left. I will show you more of the stunning pieces I got in the next post. Isn’t this strap dress with flower print too gorgeous? It fit perfectly into the Vietnamese hilly landscape. I’ve already shown you the rest of my haul in my monthly recap here. On that day we visited the beautiful Bái Đính Pagoda, which was one of my favorites. Of course, more impressions of that will follow soon!I’m currently in Strasbourg and will fly to Bordeaux this evening. Two exciting days with Grey Goose are coming up so make sure to follow on Social Media! However, I can’t wait to be finally back home at the end of this week! The three weeks of traveling were quite exhausting (don’t worry I won’t complain about that).

I’ll talk to you soon again & have a great start into the week!

7 years The Golden Bun | favorite looks 2014-2016

{products sponsored for giveaway}

7 years TGB. In conclusion of my 7 years of blogging I’ve got a little collection of my favourite looks from 2014-2016. The first part of 2010-2013 was already up here. I’m questioning myself where my love for high heels and pretty dresses has gone? A dear reader pointed that out. Contradictorily, my 20-year-old me wore more elegantly than I do now. Conny has recently written a nice article about elegancy and why it is almost frowned upon if someone dresses classy. But same for me – I prefer my ripped jeans and some sneakers a lot more. However, I’ll try to pull out my more elegant pieces once in a while. I still have a huge love for fashionable statement coasts, such as my green coat from HossIntropia or my yellow flower coat from Hallhuber. I couldn’t miss both pieces.

I’ve promised you to tell what will be next up here on the blog. We’re currently working on a new look for the blog. The relaunchThe Golden Bun 3.0 is coming very soon. Moreover, my website for all my photography i.e. portfolio, gallery etc. will launch too.

Until July it will remain wanderlusty here on the blog and I’m excited for summer (it if is finally coming here in Europe). Moreover, a couple of great collaborations are planned and I’m happy that I’ll get a little bit of support from a co-author. Therefore, I’ve got a lot of content for you guys. I don’t want to reveal all of it now!

I wish you a wonderful Sunday!

Ps.: also, last chance to participate in my birthday giveaways! good luck!

Restaurants in Munich | Afghan dinner at Lemar

[unpaid Advertisement / unbezahlte Anzeige*]

I have to admit that I prefer oriental restaurants in their home country to Asian ones in Europe. Probably because there they are much more authentic. This is why I’m always super happy when I discover a new place. A couple of weeks ago I’ve showed you my favourite oriental food stall Sababa on Viktualienmarkt. A review of my favourite Afghan restaurant Chopan at Münchner Freiheit is still missing up here.

But today I’ll introduce you to Lemar – a small oriental palace in the heart of Schwabing. Palace may be a little bit too exaggerated but the various seating areas remind me of that.

Afghan restaurant Munich Lemar

Entering Lemar you may smell the scents of the Orient – cinnamon, cardamom, fresh mint and coriander. I felt at ease: pastel coloured walls, colourful pillows and tables decorated with mosaic. The ambience is comfortable and inviting.

Lemar Food & Drinks

The menu is clearly presented and next to meat and fish dishes you’ll also find a great variation of vegetarian ones. I chose the braised lamb with eggplant, rice with vegetables and raisins. The lamb was tender and the eggplants melted on my tongue. Along with the dinner I chose a glass of Primitivo red wine, which is always a good choice.

Especially on weekends the restaurant is always packed. Therefore, I highly recommend booking a table in advance. I absolutely loved the small booth, which you can book with a bigger group. If you’re not located in Schwabing they have one restaurant in the old town and another one at the Isartor.

I hope you liked this recommendation and I wish you a wonderful day!

7 Jahre The Golden Bun! Wow, where has the time gone? Time to celebrate and my blog birthday giveaways are already in full swing. Have you already participated? My last days in Vietnam are slowly coming to an end. Today is the first day when I didn’t set an alarm, which was absolutely needed. Sleeping in was the best decision. After a couple of days in Ho Chi Minh (best city!!), I will spend the last days here in Hoi An, a small fishing village. On Thursdsay I will finally fly back to Europe. After such a long travel I always need time to acclimatise. But there won’t be any time for that – you snooze, you loose! It will continue as busy as before. On Saturday I will photograph my acquaintance’s wedding, which I’m pretty excited for. ≻ see some of my wedding photography here! Of course a lot more is planned! See more below.

… what I want to achieve, which my next station will be. Up to know most things in my life happened casually. Hadn’t I discovered randomly Chiara Ferragni on Flickr, I wouldn’t be here. Here in Hoi An. In Vietnam. On a blogger trip invited by the Vietnamese tourism department. It’s already my third Asia trip this year! On the one side I always question myself if this is the right path. Right now I’m freelancing as blogger, photographer and social media consultant. Although it works out very well my love for Architecture has fallen by the wayside. I miss it. Therefore, I would love to break out towards this direction too. Traveling is great, don’t get me wrong but right now I crave for a more regular life: To be at home at least three weeks in a row and to be able to work calmly on my projects. Althought, this won’t be the case until July. We’ll see if I will have changed my opinion by then again.
