Dar Grawa – traditional Moroccan hotel in Marrakech

Riad Dar Grawa. In Marrakesh, you have a big choice of wonderful Riads in every price bracket. The AnaYela was unfortunately booked solid for the last night and so we stayed overnight in the Riad Dar Grawa. Judging by its style, you notice immediately that it is completely different from the AnaYela. This riad is closer to the Boutique Riad style and the whole house is excellently tiled. That is the beauty about Marrakesh that you find something for every taste.

Riad Dar Grawa

From their design, the rooms resemble more a classic hotel. It is true, that the rooms are somewhat bigger than at Riad AnaYela, but the bathrooms are much smaller. The bed was comfortable and we slept very well in it. However, the feeling was different. Although the room showed to an inner court, there was no access to open air. Especially in the morning you felt the need of airing thoroughly. In the bathroom there was no surface for our cosmetic articles and all in all it was minimally equipped. But overall it was clean and the room was nicely decorated.

Room prices are starting from 215€ / night. Make your reservation here!

When visiting Marrakesh I strongly recommend picking a riad with terrace, as you do a lot of footage during the day and afterwards you would like to chill fully. Our terrace was small and sweet. However, when we arrived at the terrace in the late afternoon, unfortunately, all seats were taken, but I am sure they will put other deckchairs there on request.

Riad Dar Grawa The breakfast

Breakfast at the Riad Dar Grawa was also included, and it was a very copious one. Besides my beloved Thé à la menthe there were croissants, fresh bread and fruit salads. In Marrakesh you always get freshly pressed orange juice, which I also love to drink at home.

Riad Dar Grawa The Location

The location of Riad Dar Grawa is excellent, as all important sights are within five minutes’ walking distance, as e.g. the Bahia Palace, die Saadian Tombs or the El Badi Palace. Besides the souks are only about ten minutes away.

On the whole, we had a very nice but short stay at the Riad Dar Grawa and I can only recommend it to you.

Riad Laarousthe new Riad of Dar Grawa

Incidentally, the Riad Dar Grawa has now established a second branch being styled in a completely different way – the Riad Laarous. It follows the concept of a kind of small farm in the middle of the town. We visited the Riad Laarous two weeks before its inauguration and meanwhile you will find it online. There you will discover a more rustic ambiance – the riad has been partly designed by nonprofessionals, which conveys an uncompleted character to it. This is intentional, in order to create a cosier atmosphere

Riad Laarous The rooms

The rooms of the Riad Laarous have a country style equipment creating a reference to the barnyard so that you feel like living on a farm. The interior is designed with great care, and the wood together with the partly plastered and partly unplastered walls give it a super look.

We could not leave the Riad Laarous without a meal and therefore returned to it the last day. The owner’s mother is the cook and we were looking forward to typical Moroccan specialties. The bread and the Tajines are prepared in the oven located in the interior courtyard and they tasted deliciously. If you wish to eat there, you can make a reservation and also order beforehand, what you would like to eat.

Marrakech | Royal Hammam at La Sultana

A Royal Hammam. On our last day we wanted to treat ourselves with a special experience and walked to the . After we’d walked so much the last days a relaxing morning was all we needed. Therefore, we pampered ourselves with a Royal Hammam at the hotel. Neither my mom or I had ever done a traditional Hammam and we were very curious.

As soon as we arrived at the hotel we were warmly welcomed and brought to the spa area. After they’d asked us for allergies or likewise we were brought to the changing rooms where a bathrobe and slippers were waiting for us. They were nicely folded in a large box. Given the fact, that we’d arrived a little bit earlier than our appointment we could take a dip in the whirlpool. However I’d wished that the water temperatures would have been a little bit warmer.

La Sultana Royal Hammam

The Royal Hammam took place in two different rooms. In the first one, the steam room, we were prepared for the first treatment. Firstly, our bodies were slathered with eucalyptus oil. Secondly, they turned on the steam and we let the oil absorb for around ten minutes. Afterwards we were brought to the second room where our body was cleansed. We were dashed with lots of water, which was so pleasant. A whole body peeling followed and our hair got a chocolate package. The whole treatment endured around 30 minutes. I highly recommend a traditional hammam because it is definitely an experience you won’t get outside of Morocco.

La Sultana Hotels Signature

The La Sultana Hotels Signature is a 5* star luxury hotel and the rest of the hotel is way too beautiful not to show you. All in all, the hotel consists out of five different riads, which are connected with each other. Each riad is decorated and designed differently. The terrace also connects all riads and you can look into them from the top. The view from the terrace at La Sultana is indeed incredible and you’ll get a great view on the rooftops of Marrakech and also onto the Atlas mountains. So beautiful!

Marrakech – 5 things to do!

Marrakech. Marrakech has been on my list for a couple of years now. Especially since so many blogger have started to visit and posted pictures about their experiences on Instagram. There are so many great places to discover. I’ve already shown you a couple of impressions from our city trip in my last posts. However, some more posts are still awaiting you.

Here’s a little recap of what we’ve seen in the three days in Marrakech which I highly recommend.

Things to do in Marrakech Do some classic sightseeing

Marrakech is rich of beautiful palaces, tombs, gardens, mosques and much more. To visit some of the classic sightseeing spots isn’t wrong. We visited the following sights and they were so interesting to discover:

  • Saadian Tombs – an impressive mausoleum holding about sixty members of the Saadi Dynasti. Entrance fee is 10 Dhs
  • Bahia Palace – a beautiful palace built in the 19th centruy with a stunning variety of courtyards. Definitely a must-do! Entrance fee is 70 Dhs
  • Jardins de la Majorelle – this beautiful historic garden was discovered by Yves Saint Laurent and he restored and redesigned it. Absolutely worth to see. Entrance fee for the garden is 70 Dhs
  • Musée Yves Saint Laurent – the new YSL museum was opened in 2017 and holds a stunning variety of photographs and works. My highlight was the magical room where some of his masterpieces were exhibit. Entrance fee 100 Dhs (combi-ticket with the Jardins de La Majorelle 180 Dhs)
  • Musée de la Photographie – I absolutely loved the building of the Musée de la Photographie and it had impressive photographs of the old Medina. Entrance fee is 40 Dhs
  • Medersa Ben Youssef – the old Islamic college. It was the biggest medersa in North Africa and supposedly holded up to 900 students. The interior is beautifully decorated with inscriptions and geometric patterns. In fact, the Islam prohibits a representation of humans or animals. Entrance fee is 20 Dhs the Medersa is currently being renovated until 2020!

Things to do in Marrakech Discover some luxury hotels

You would never imagine what beautiful Riads and hotels are hidden behind Moroccan doors. In Marrakech you’ll find the most beautiful luxury riads and hotels. We had the pleasure to experience two of them. Moreover, we visited some more luxury hotels, i.e. the Royal Mansour, La Sultana and Four Seasons Hotel. La Mamounia is also very famous.

Things to do in Marrakech Try some of the amazing Moroccan restaurants

I’m a huge fan of Moroccan food and I could eat a delicious chicken or vegetable tagine every day. There are a lot of great restaurants in the Medina but also outside of the old city. Here are some restaurants you should absolutely try:

Things to do in Marrakech Get lost in the Souks …

You can’t leave Marrakech without having spent a couple of hours in the Souks. They are vibrant, colourful, hectic and energetic. However, you should be able to say no all the time people want to sell you something. I’m not sure if the prices for pottery is cheaper than buying them in a regular store with fix prices. If you like to bargain you’re in the right place! Being a photographer the Souks were the perfect spot for taking pictures. The light shined beautifully through the wooden roofs.

… and eat some street food!

The food looked so good on the street and why not trying some. In the end we ended up a little fish shop and had some great fried fish. At this point speaking French is definitely a help and people would treat you differently right away speaking their second language.

Things to do in Marrakech Do some shopping – but don’t exaggerate

Lastly, you should definitely do some shopping. Unfortunately, we only had hand luggage and we only bought a couple of beautiful small tagines and some silver pieces. You’ll find a whole range of beautiful carpets, pillow covers, jewelry, clothing and much more. Some of the vendors are also shipping the items to Europe. However, be careful when you bargain. Most of the times you should start at least with half the price the vendor is proposing. Also, the technique of faking to go will decrease the price more.

The Glam Spirit

DE
Glam Spirit.

Thomas Sabo Glam Spirit

Restaurants in Marrakech | Dinner at AnaYela

[unpaid Advertisement / unbezahlte Anzeige*]

AnaYela. To experience the Riad AnaYela to the fullest we stayed at the riad for dinner on our first evening. Also, we arrived quite late, which was the perfect timing. I ate Moroccan a couple of times in Paris before but I was curious to taste some very traditional dishes. To begin with, the staff at AnaYela was so friendly and welcoming, that it was really a pleasure to stay there. Regionality is not even questioned in the city because everybody buys vegetables, meat and fish directly at their market. In fact, each neighbourhood has its own daily market.

The food was freshly prepared in the kitchen and we had three different types of butter as a starter – butter with parsley, one with honey and the third one with olives. Along with some typical fresh bread it tasted already so good. But I had to be careful because a four-course-menu followed and bread is always so filling. Afterwards we had a fresh salad with avocado, fennel, oranges, onions and dill. I could eat so much of that salad and the dressing was so good.

The second dish was a typical Pastilla, which was our favourite through out the trip. It’s a light pastry stuffed with vegetables and vermicelli noodles. As main course we had a Tagine with braised chicken with some rice. The chicken was so tender and the orange sauce was amazing. Our dinner ended with a light mango cream and we were happy and satisfied.

Dinner at AnaYela costs 35€ per menu. I don’t know if you can eat there if you’re not a guest but maybe you can request it via email.
