Mama Thresl. Although having grown up in South Tyrol in former times I hated hiking in the mountains. As youngster I had always refused to join my parents for a hike. However, in the last five years I changed my mind completely and I am time and again attracted by the mountains. Why ramble to far away destinations, when you have the Alps nearby? Over the week in town and the weekend in the mountains. That’s exactly the beauty about living in Munich.

Having finally delivered my master’s thesis two weeks ago, I looked forward with great joy to the following weekend. A post-thesis/pre-birthday weekend was just the right thing. Mum had taken a day off for my birthday on Monday and instead of staying in Munich we spontaneously popped off to Leogang. Fortunately the hip Mama Thresl hotel had still a room free and was the perfect choice for two nights. Leogang is about a two and a half hours drive from Munich and one hour more from Bozen.

We arrived in the late afternoon and checked in at the hotel. When entering you are immediately welcomed by atmospheric music and by extremely friendly and young personnel. The majority of the guests is around the thirties I guess, but there were also families and some elderly people.

Mama Thresl Urban soul meets the alps

The Mama Thresl is a small debonair hotel of fifty rooms. The interior is mainly built of solid wood combined with fair-faced concrete. Especially attractive are the Near to heaven rooms with a private Hot Tub on their own terrace.

We stayed in one of the Wooden Style Rooms, which had the perfect size. When entering there was a big sink in front of you. To the left a separate toilet and the big rain shower to the left. It was all open but they’d installed some windows that you could close the bathroom area. I only have one remark – the hairdryer, which was terrible. The front plastic always fell down while drying my hair.

We had enough time before dinner to explore the Sauna area located at the uppermost floor. Here, too, the main element is solid wood and the wellness or Panoramic Heat, as they call it, is very cosy. There is also a relaxation room featuring a stove and a small Sauna.

The hotel is not specialising in wellness, but for some sauna tours in the afternoon/evening it is well suited. Saturday is usually the departure day and thus there were only a few residents. On Sundays, however, it is crammed and most of the deck and other chairs were occupied. The sauna area is open until 22:00 hours and in the evening it is particularly quiet there.

Mama Thresl Drinks & Food

The first evening we had our meal at the hotel. Non-residents are also welcome and an evening there is worth it. On Saturdays a BBQ evening with buffet is offered at 18€. I had looked forward to a meat dinner, but only a vegetarian one was offered as well as some fish variations for the piscetarians amongst you. I highly recommend the Pulled Pork Burger, which was very delicious! We spent a nice evening and dropped right away into our beds, as tired as we were.

Mama Thresl Breakfast buffet

Next morning I was already looking forward to the breakfast buffet. On Sundays it’s pancake time prepared by Flo for you. I had already looked forward to it since the evening before. Besides fresh fruit, maple syrup and jams also everything else was available for a perfect pancake topping. Also, all kinds of egg dishes, breakfast bacon, cheese and sausage dishes were not missing. All dishes had very fondly designed name tags.

The total hotel concept emanates great care for every detail. For example the various kinds of bread were written by laser on a long wooden board. By the way, the bread was excellent (and I really know a thing or two about bread). On Monday I had my birthday and I was pleased about a nice gesture of the hotel. On the breakfast sets there was a sweet birthday compliment and the morning started well off clinking two glasses of Prosecco on the hotel.

Leogang Outdoor activities

The Mama Thresl is directly located at the Asitzbahn and the famous Bikepark. It is the perfect location for a hiking – / biking- or in the winter skiing weekend. My brother is a passionate downhiller and was quite jealous hat we could spend two nights there. Formerly I did a lot of mountain biking, but I would not dare going on a downhill run again.

After breakfast on Sunday we took a pleasant ride on the Asitzbahn up to the Asitz plateau. Its tickets are included in the hotel price and up there the Mama Thresl has a one more branch called Hendl Fischerei. It is closed in the summer but in the winter you may have a break there while skiing and thus enjoy viewing the marvellous panorama. We walked around on the plateau for some hours and saw the surrounding mountains already powdered with snow. But dear winter please wait, it’s too early for you!

Huwi’s Alm Traditional Hut dinner

Mama Thresl is one of the many projects by their owner Huwi and Renate but their first one was the alpine village Priesteregg with beautiful chalets. Moreover, they serve traditional food at their Huwi’s Alm, where we spent our last evening. Starting off with garlic bread and a delicious salad the Hut dinner (german for hat) was about to start. The hat is heatened up from below and you pour soup around it. Afterwards you place the meat and you can dash it with soup while it’s cooking. Dinner was delicious and it was just all so cozy.

Of course, we couldn’t resist their tasty desserts and took the dessert variation with curd cheese dumplings, strawberries, millefeuille and vanilla ice cream with pumpkin seed oil. So delicious.

All in all, my mom and I had a wonderful weekend at Leogang. Thank you so much for this great experience.
