One week in Dubai. The week in Dubai flew by so quickly. Let’s come to the second part of Dubai now. We’ve seen a lot of beautiful places on our last days, among them were probably my favorite activities and sights in Dubai (add the Desert Safari Dubai!). Don’t miss the first part here!

One week in Dubai DAY 4 – Gold & spice souks

On our fourth day, we finally visited the Old Town Dubai, which is definitely a lot more authentic than the rest of the city. Our first stop was the Gold Souk, which is a large covered shopping street full with jewelry stores. Bring lots of patience and a little bit of money. We saw so many beautiful pieces. Of course, we ended up buying some marvelous rings, which I’m wearingnearly every day now. If you don’t want to buy real gold you can also buy gold-plated silver rings, like we did. Bargain as much as you can!

Continue your walk and you’ll get to the Spice Souks. I don’t know if it is a lot cheaper to buy spices there (haven’t asked for prices) but it is definitely worth seeing. As soon as you’ll get out of the small alleys, you’ll reach the Dubai Creek, which was definitely my favorite part. The sun was shining hot and we walked along the riverside. It was so beautiful and reminded me a lot of Istanbul.

Little recommendation: There are small boats, which will take you around the river. But we discovered that the cheapest way is to simply cross the river. This costs 1 DHS, while taking a longer boat tour costs around 25 DHS.

One week in Dubai DAY 4 – Dinner at Ewaan at The Palace Downtown Dubai

We were invited to have dinner at Ewaan Restaurant at the Downtown Palace Hotel in the evening. As I mentioned most of the restaurants and bars are located in hotels. Moreover, most of them offer various theme nights – likewise the Downtown Palace Hotel. Every Wednesday it’s The Return of The Arabian Night at the Ewaan Restaurant, which is quite popular in the city. They serve a huge buffet with Oriental specialties. Outside you’ll find a barbecue. Of course, full entertainment is offered and there is a belly dancer and a traditional dancer (get an idea of it here).

When you are in Dubai, you can’t miss the beautiful Dubai Fountain Water Performance in front of the Dubai Mall. The performance takes place every half hour in the evening and is so beautiful to see/breathtaking/stunning. You’ll get the full picture in my Dubai Travel Vlog.

One week in Dubai DAY 5 – Off to Abu Dhabi

Luckily, Conny had told us that Abu Dhabi was only a 1.5 half hour drive away from Dubai. Perfect distance for a daytrip! We’ve rented a car via Sixt a couple of days before and booked it for our last two days. We paid around 25$ per day, which was super cheap. Moreover, fuel costs nothing in the Emirates. The main reason we wanted to go to Abu Dhabi was of course the famous Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

One week in Dubai Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was initiated by president His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. He wanted to establish a cultural center for the diversity of the Islamic religion. Moreover, the aim to combine as many cultures as possible results in using different materials from all over the world, i.e. Italy, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Greece, the UAE and many more. The mosque was constructed from 1996 to 2007 and is the largest mosque in the UAE. It can hold up to 40,000 worshipers. Another interesting feature is the World’s Largest Carpet in one of the Prayer Rooms.

The entrance to the Mosque is for free. Dress properly when visiting!

One week in Dubai DAY 5 – Internet City

The Internet City was one of the last stops of our visit. We wanted to see the Palm Jumeirah from above and discovered that you could enjoy the view from the Observatory of the Dubai Marriott Harbour Hotel & Suites. The Palm Jumeirah is an artificially built island in the form of a palm. On one hand, I don’t recommend to just drive to and on the island because you don’t really get a feeling of the shape of it. Moreover, you’ll only find hotels and housing. On the other hand, I really liked the harbor of the Internet City. The evening light was beautiful and you can take a walk along the riverside.

One week in Dubai DAY 6 – Black Palace Beach

Definitely plan in a day (or two days) at the beach! There are tons of beach clubs but we weren’t willing to pay a lot for entrance or consuming/alimentation. We discovered the beautiful public Black Palace Beach and drove there by car. The beach is quite calm even though you’ll find lots of local people. The water is super clear and you’ll have a nice view onto the famous Burj Al Arab Hotel.

One week in Dubai DAY 5 – Madinat Jumeirah

Last but not least, you can combine a day at the beach with a little evening walk through the Madinat Jumeirah. The Madinat is a cluster of hotels, restaurants and shops along the beachside. Of course, all artificially built in 2004. All in all, it’s nice to see but not a must-do in my opinion. Parking is free for two hours, which is absolutely enough time to visit the whole place.

I hope you’ve enjoyed the last part of my Dubai travel diaries! If you want to read more articles about Dubai, have a look here!

Dinner at Shang Palace – Dubai’s best Chinese restaurant

[unpaid Advertisement / unbezahlte Anzeige*]

EN
Shang Palace. Our stay at the Shangri-La Dubai Hotel included one dinner at their Chinese restaurant Shang Palace. I’ve already traveled to China in September 2013 and have been a huge fan of their cooking style since then. Chinese food is something that is offered throughout the world, but not often will you find really good and authentic dishes. Therefore, I’m always super happy when I get the opportunity to eat in good Chinese restaurants.

Shang Palace

Shang Palace is one of the signature restaurants of the Shangri-La Hotels worldwide and offers a delightful taste of authentic Cantonese cuisine. In fact, the restaurant was awarded the Best Chinese Restaurant by What’s On Awards in 2013-2014. It is traditionally decorated and looks a lot like the restaurants I saw in China – decoration, atmosphere, round tables. The Chinese love round tables as they put everything in the middle and share the dishes.

Shang Palace The dishes

Typical Cantonese and provincial delicacies are for example Yum Cha or the famous Beijing Duck (even though people claim that you can’t get a real Beijing duck outside of China). The Spicy Cucumbers (26 AED – 7,3€) are one of my favorite Chinese starters, so we had to order them. Moreover, we had the Crispy Prawns with mango-mayonnaise sauce (68 AED – 17,8€). The starters were already super delicious. We ordered two meat dishes as the main course accompanied with fried and steamed rice. The main courses were a wok-fried sliced black angus beef sirloin in ginger and spring onion sauce (95 AED – 25€) and the deep-fried chicken breast with dried chili and Sichuan pepper (88 AED – 23€). Both were very tasteful and sophisticated!

As a sweet conclusion the waiter persuaded us to try their signature desserts: a Valhrona chocolate and Long Jing fondant with green tea (55 AED – 14,4€) and a deconstructed Tonka bean crème brûlée with mango and caramel (55 AED – 14,4€). Wow! The creations were fantastic and super interesting. We couldn’t ask for a better ending!

Shangri-La Dubai – luxury hotel in Dubai

shangri-la dubai hotel _ dubai luxury hotel

Shangri-La Dubai. I’m still speechless when thinking of our stay at the Shangri-La Dubai. The first time we entered a bright entrance hall welcomed us. There are beautiful marble walls in combination with golden elements, round shapes and a fresh new look. We were super lucky because the hotel had just finished renovations and we were some of the first guests to see the whole new entrance hall. Hashtag interiorlove! The hotel had a lot more to offer. You’ll see…

Shangri-La Dubai Room with a view

Now this is what I call a room with a view. The Burj Khalifa is like Dubai’s Eiffel Tower. It is super impressive and I always got quite excited when seeing the world’s highest building (find more pictures of our visit to the 124th floor up here). It was just perfect having a room facing the Burj. Besides that, how crazy is the traffic system? It’s just so different than the roads we have in Europe. Our Deluxe Burj Khalifa View Room was fully equipped and we had a comfortable large king size bed. When you entered, there was an elegant bathroom with bathtub and a separate shower. Apart from the amazing view we also had a little bar, a large desk and a small cupboard. As a little welcome gift, we had got some amazing sweets, which we ate immediately. Fresh fruit and water were always filled up. I have one little remark, though. The space for our luggage was quite limited. We were travelling with two suitcases and one trolley. The cupboard was fine and there were some more drawers. But if you didn’t want to hang up everything in the wardrobe there was only little space in the hallway.

Room prices for a Deluxe Sea View Room start from 765 AED / night (around 197€)
Deluxe Burj Khalifa View Room start from 800 AED / night (around 200€)Book your room here

Shangri-La Dubai The breakfast buffet-heaven

The breakfast offer of the Shangri-La Dubai was one of the best I’ve ever had. The choice was huge. There was a large Continental banquet with fresh salmon and different kinds of cheese from France and Switzerland, fresh fruit and different yoghurts and muesli. In the back there was a large variety of Indian and Asian specialities. They also had a Chinese noodle bar, which I had to try. It reminded me of my trip to China where we always had a soup for breakfast. Moreover, you could order your eggs in any style. I was so happy when I discovered that they served Oeuf Benedict, which is probably one of my favourite breakfast dishes (not the lightest, though). And I nearly forgot to mention the bread and pastry station. Next to traditional baguettes there were different kinds of wholemeal loafs and more. If you are a sweet tooth you’re absolutely right there. You’ll also find delicious pastries and cakes. Ok, can I go back please?

Shangri-La Dubai Pool area, spa & night club

Even though Dubai has lots to see, we also enjoyed some time at the pool. The large pool area is located on the fourth floor, same as the spa area. The pool will convert into a nightclub in the evening but is open to guests until 10pm, which is great. During the day it is quite crowded at the pool but in the evening you’ll find less guests. The best part about the pool is the view onto the Burj Khalifa (I told you that I always got excited when I saw it). The spa area is separated for women and men. The area had a little sauna, a steam bath and three different types of Jacuzzis. The ambience was relaxing but the light was dimmed a little bit too low to read. I absolutely loved the water infusions they offered in the spa.

Shangri-La Dubai Pool area, spa & night club

The Shangri-La Dubai has eight different restaurants and bars, e.g. a Chinese restaurant, the Shang Palace, a French-Vietnamese brasserie Hoi An or the The Act Dubai, which is a New-York-City nightlife theatre. We opted for the Shang Palace and a full review will be online tomorrow. All in all, we had an excellent stay at the Shangri-La Dubai and I’m looking forward to going back.

I hope you enjoyed this article and if you want to read more articles about Dubai, !
Have a wonderful day!

Evening Desert Safari Dubai

desert safari dubai _ desert dubai _ how to get to the desert dubai _ dubai desert safari
Evening Desert Safari Dubai. Going to the desert was on my wish list forever! While in Marrakesh you need to count in at least two days to go to the desert, in Dubai you can go there for half a day, which is great! You can book several tours. We booked an evening desert safari on . The company offered the cheapest tour for 150 AED (around 40€). The rest of the tours were around 60-70€. You can also book a private tour but they are way more expensive. Please note that the tours are probably the most touristic thing you can do in Dubai. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of other possible ways to go to the desert on your own. One way would be to drive to , which is a beautiful desert resort, and enjoy the view from its terrace.

I was wearing a White Cove dress

desert safari dubai _ desert dubai _ how to get to the desert dubai _ dubai desert safari

Evening Desert Safari Dubai

But back to our desert jeep tour. We were picked up at the hotel and drove approximately 45 minutes into the desert. You’ll be brought to a place where you can rent quads and meanwhile they’ll get the jeep ready for the dunes. We waited half an hour as no one wanted to rent some quads. Maybe you can ask your driver to skip this and stay longer in the desert. Afterwards a bumpy, speed drive through the desert was on the agenda. This is all part of the entertainment! But as soon as we got out of the car and stood in the middle of the desert is was just beautiful. The sun was just about to set and we had enough time to shoot some pictures.

Our tour ended in a desert camp where we had dinner. Moreover, they always have a fire show, a belly dancer and some traditional dances. We came back around 9pm. Especially the last part was super touristic and maybe you can take a camel tour instead. All in all, it was still worth to book a tour and we also thought about going there one more time.

Xiao Long Bao & Spicy Dumplings at Din Tai Fung Dubai

[unpaid Advertisement / unbezahlte Anzeige*]

Din Tai Fung Dubai. Dumplings, dumplings, dumplings! Or some may call them Dim Sum. Those soft, delicious stuffed little things. Dim Sum is definitely one of my favorite Asian dishes. You can imagine how happy I was when I discovered that a Din Tai Fung had opened a while ago in Dubai. First thing to do when visiting the huge Mall of the Emirates!

Din Tai Fung Dubai

I didn’t know that Din Tai Fung was a Taiwanese restaurant company. However, Din Tai Fung has its origins in China. Founder Yang Bingyi was born in Shanxi, China and moved to Taiwan in 1948. The first opening of his restaurant dates back to 1958. To make the business survive, they only offered steamed buns, the famous Xiao Long Baos. Nowadays, Din Tai Fung has expanded its menu and offers a great variety of Chinese dishes. In 2009 Mr Bingyi opened his first restaurant in Hong Kong, which was awarded a Michelin star by the Hong Kong and Macau 2010 edition of the Michelin Guide. Likewise, the second restaurant he opened in Hong Kong. Din Tai Fung has now branches all over the world.

Din Tai Fung Food & Drinks

We ordered some Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings) and some spicy dumplings. Moreover, we had two steamed buns as starters. The Xiao Long Baos were good but the best I’ve ever eaten remain the ones at Jia Jia Tang Bao in Beijing. All in all we payed 136 DHS (35€) for two people. The restaurant is quite popular within the Mall. Therefore, you should go there right away. You’ll get a buzzer which will inform you as soon as your table is ready.
