Easter weekend in Vienna – 5 things we’ve done

Easter weekend in Vienna. Travelling around Easter is always super expensive, which is why we’ve decided to drive somewhere by car. Four days were perfect to go a little bit farther and we decided to visit my brother in Vienna.

My last time is so long ago, I think I was 16, 17 years old. Together with five girlfriends we went to Vienna and all I remember is that it was super cold, we couldn’t get into the bars because we were under 18 and the way from the metro to our hostel. Great memories, right? I guess this is why I never went back. Although I have a lot of friends and acquaintances from back home who live there. But this should have an end now! Especially becase Vienna looks always so great on other blogs. Moreover, I’d collected quite a number of restaurant (of course, way too many for one weekend). Traveling for good food is always a reason!

Starting off at the COLLIO Restaurant

With more than an hour of delay (due to parking restrictions in Vienna) we finally arrived at DAS Triest Hotel, which invited us over Easter. Usually delays in hotels don’t matter but I’d already booked a table at the COLLIO restaurant for lunch. It should be the perfect start, which it was.

Gourmet chef Josef Neuherz leads the Collio, which focuses on North Italian dishes inspired by the Collio region.
As a starter we had bruschetta with dried tomato cream, roasted artichokes, rucola & burrata and with orange & basil marinated salmon “label rouge” with avocado, cress & ciabatta chips. Both dishes were a great creative and delicious start. Homemade gnocchi Starter with mangold, pine nuts & goat cheese followed for my boyfriend. I chose the grilled fillet of beef steak served with „Barolo“ sauce and rucola salad. Nothing to complain!

Prices are in the higher level but they do have a great lunch menu for 16€ and a 5-course menu for 50€, which I highly recommend.

Stroll through the old town

On our first day we took it slowly and went on a long walk through the city center. I didn’t even bring my camera! We passed the famous Hotel Sacher. Of course, there was a long line, which made me crave a Sachertorte even more. The Stephansdom is always beautiful to see and we got lost in the small alleys. Accidentally we found the Figlmüller, where I’d eaten those big Schnitzels years ago (it became very touristy). What I loved the most was the area around the Volksgarten and the Museumsviertel.

Brunch at The Guesthouse Vienna

On Sunday we skipped our breakfast at the hotel and went into the city centre. I’d heard only good things about The Guesthouse Vienna where we met up with my brother for a little Easter brunch. They have a great selection of breakfast and brunch dishes. Whenever I see poached eggs on the menu I need to go for it. In the end, we ordered three Egg Benedict, a simple breakfast and a yellow smoothie. Everything was really good. My brother ended his feast with a tasty cheesecake.

Palace garden strolls at Schönbrunn & Belvedere

Sunday was such a stunning day and after brunch we drove to the Schloss Schönbrunn. Given the fact, that it was Easter sunday we weren’t the only ones that had the idea to go there. There were so many people! I was still so full from breakfast. A little siesta was needed and sat down on the first bench we found a little bit away from the crowds. Half an hour later we discovered a much more comfortable place and slept for one more half an hour.

Later that afternoon we also went to the Schloss Belvedere, which was the perfect timing to go there. The park was about to close and there weren’t so many people. Moreover, the atmosphere was so beautiful. I highly recommend visiting both parks.

Cake break at Café Drechsler / Naschmarkt

In between our park visits we stopped at the Naschmarkt for a little cake break. Compared to weekdays the Naschmarkt was super empty. When in Vienna you need to stop at one of those traditional cafés. Cakes are the best there!

We went to Café Drechsler, which is super cozy and serves delicious sweets. Finally I got my Sachertorte and the Apfelstrudel was delicious too. Not to mention that hill of cream. Yummy!
