2018’s most read articles on TGB

Good news – 2018 is not over yet. Same procedure as every year. I drove home to South Tyrol for Christmas. While I’m enjoying some calm pre-Christmas days, it’s time to reminisce in old posts. Here are 2018 most read articles on The Golden Bun.

Interior: IKEA PAX organisation

No wonder that this post is one of my 2018 most read articles this year. I’ve already had a PAX system in my old flat but one thing was clear – I want doors! As much as I love to see all my clothes it was time to hide everything and have a much cleaner room. Next step would be to get some pretty door handles or mirrored wardrobe doors.

2 Interior: THE BED-SITE SITUATION

How hard is it to find a lovely bedside table? I found it extremely difficult. Luckily, I found one that suit the style of my room perfectly. Also, it’s the same wood than my bed legs and standing lamp. I’d say jackpot!

4 Travel: CROATIA – MALI LOSINJ

Luckily, my co-authors could cover a couple of my press trips this year and came back with some beautiful content. The long weekend trip to Mali Losinj this year was one of your favorites. And I can tell – I was a little bit jealous that I couldn’t join on that trip.

5 Travel: SWEDEN – A DESIGN ESCAPE TO VAXJÖ

Weekend getaways are simply the best. As much as I love city getaways a mix of nature and rural flair is the best. Vaxjö in Sweden had surprisingly a lot to offer also desing-wise.

6 Hotel review: AROSEA LIFE AND BALANCE

How long have I been telling you that I need to write about South Tyrol more? Too many times. I’m glad that this post was among 2018 most read articles. South Tyrol has so much to offer. Not to mention how many beautiful hotels for a beautiful mountain getaway such as the Arosea Life and Balance.

7 Beauty: SUPERHERO FOR DRY SKIN

Skin care is never an easy topic. It took me quite some time to find the perfect products. I was a 100% satisfied with the SuperFruits skin care line from Beauté Pacifique for the last year. Nonetheless, I am going to try to change all my beauty products into natural ones (and preferably plastic free). Fingers crossed that I find the perfect products right away.

8 Berlin: JAPANESE FINE DINING – Ryōtei 893

Living in Berlin and loving the food scene you won’t get by all the restaurants of Duc Ngo, the cook without profession. I’ve already been to most of his restaurants. I definitely spent a lovely evening at Ryōtei 893 Restaurant and highly recommend it. However, his Vietnamese/French brasserie Madame Ngo is going to remain my favorite.

9 Interior: MY LONG AWAITED SIDEBOARD

It took me a long time to realize that white rooms are quite boring (no offense if you’ve styled your flat all white as long as you love it). I tried to add some cozy colors with my grey bed and one of my latest additions is this bold red sideboard.

I wish you a wonderful day!

Coming home for Christmas…

… and I wish for lots of snow. I got back home on Sunday already. Amandine joined the fun and we had such a great ski day at Alpe di Siusi yesterday. Unfortunately, there isn’t as much snow as we had last year. Fingers crossed that it’ll snow soon.

Fine dining in Tokyo | Nadaman at Shangri-La Tokyo

Do you remember my Dubai trip? At that time, I spent the night with my best friend at the beautiful Shangri-La Dubai. The luxury hotel chain is known worldwide for its exceptional design and hospitality. Consequently, we could not refuse the dinner invitation to the Shangri-La Hotel, Tokyo, which was the perfect end to our Tokyo adventure.

Shangri-La TOKYO

Shangri-La, Tokyo Hotel is located a few steps from Tokyo Station. On the ground floor you’ll find only the elevators, which take you up to the reception on the 28th floor and the beautiful lobby bar. The luxury hotel offers its guests three restaurants: the Italian restaurant Il Piacere, the L’Aperitivo bar and its Japanese signature restaurant Nadaman. Of course, our visit took us to the Japanese Nadaman.

Fine dining in Tokyo at NADAMAN

The Japanese restaurant Nadaman is run by Chef Takehiko Yoshida. When entering the restaurant we immediately spot the beautiful glowing skyline of Tokyo. The restaurant is modern Japanese. Particularly noteworthy are the light paper art works whose elements run through the entire restaurant. To the left of the entrance you’ll find the open sushi bar. Those seats are very popular and to recommend as you can see the chefs preparing sushi.

Nadaman THE MENU

Not only can you eat à la carte at Nadaman but also choose from various special dinner courses (between 10000-2000 yen / ~ 77-155 €).

We choose the menu “Yorokobi” with an appetizer, sashimi, a variation of tempura, a fillet of beef, four pieces of sushi, miso soup and a sweet dessert. While Julia is trying a sparkling sake, I’m sipping a classic sake.

  • In this article I told you that sake in Japan is usually not drunk hot, as in Europe. The rice wine is diluted with still or bubbly water. Sparkling sake is becoming more and more popular in Japan.

My personal highlight was the four pieces of nigiri with freshest slices of fish. The beef fillet was also excellent and I liked the Japanese version a lot.

I was super impressed by the meter-long chandelier in the staircase of Shangri-La Tokyo, as well as the chandelier in the lobby bar, which you can see in the following picture. The latter consists of a variety of small Ginkgo Biloba leaves (Japanese イ チ ョ ウ / ichô) – the landmark of Tokyo. Just beautiful!

South Tyrolean kitchen | Italian salat (Russian salat) with brokkoli, chard and turnip

Wow! Already the 2nd Advent weekend and slowly I am getting into the Christmas spirit. I am looking forward to Christmas in South Tyrol. This year I’ll spend three weeks there and I am so happy about it. I look forward to the celebrations with my family (which includes excellent food from my mum).

What would Christmas be like without an Italian salad in South Tyrol? The hearty dish is eaten not only as a side dish at Christmas or New Year’s Eve, but also in our house as a “light” lunch with steamed broccoli, chard and swede germs.

  • The Italian Salad is similar to the Russian salad “Olivje”, which additionally contains gherkins and pieces of sausage.

Rezept
Italienischer Salat

1.5 kg of potatoes
3 carrots
1 small glass of capers
about 200g of Leerdamer cheese
Mayonnaise
1 small glass of peas (mini size)
1 grated apple

Cook the potatoes and carrots the day before. Cut potatoes, carrots and Leerdamer cheese into small cubes and place in a large bowl. Add the peas and capers. Mix all the ingredients with the mayonnaise, add the grated apple and season with salt and pepper.

E finito!

The salad is also wonderful as a party salad. Try it and I’m sure you’ll fall in love with it.

I wish you a wonderful 2nd advent weekend!
